The closer I came to leaving for my Northwest vacation, the more things started to show up. Stressful things. The day before I left, water started spewing out of the wall of my rental property. I got it fixed, then it happened again. I got it fixed again.
Then, when I went online to check into my flight, I discovered I didn’t have a ticket! (Even though I had a receipt and a confirmation number.) I stayed on hold with the emergency travel agent line for about 3 hours, then decided to show up at the airport at 5 am and get it straightened out. Despite my best efforts (and believe me, I know how make things happen), they weren’t going to let me on that oversold flight.
I had a choice.
I could leave, retrieve my car from long term parking, head home and cancel my immersion in the woods of Oregon and deep-dive VIP days with my mentors.
Or I could figure out another way. It didn’t take me longer than a second to say I’M NOT GOING HOME and I’m NOT missing a day of my vacation. I booked a $600 one-way ticket that got me to Portland just an hour later than scheduled. BAM!
BUT my subconscious (the tricky thing that tries to keep you playing small and not growing) wasn’t finished throwing out different ways to stop me.
When the plane landed, I turned my phone on and received a picture of my 15-year-old son’s head with a deep gash. His text message: “Does this need stitches?”
I handled it and kept on.
The next day I received a call that my mom had been in a car accident. Nothing too serious, but it had scared both of my parents pretty good.
Yes, all of that happened around a trip that was a commitment to my own growth. I see this kind of craziness all the time in my life and the lives of my clients.
And what I’ve learned is that giving up in these challenging moments is the #1 reason people don’t make it to the next level.
Here’s the thing: Every time you step into a new growth area or a new stage SOMETHING is going to show up to stop you.
When I was growing up, “Dog has bone” was how my Mother described my personality.
It drove my mom crazy, but I see today that it is actually a gift and serves me well…. Especially in these moments. (Not only that! It’s also known as “Burning Desire”—one of the necessary ingredients to creating wealth in Think and Grow Rich.)
Having “Dog Has Bone” energy is a crucial part of being an entrepreneur. Because it’s a guarantee that when it’s time to take the next step of growth, everything that could go wrong, will. The day you’re giving a presentation, an alcoholic family member acts up. Or just as you’re about to meet a new client, you twist your ankle.
The only way to succeed is to PUSH through it anyway! In other words, you’ve got to get all “Dog Has Bone!” with what you really, ultimately want.
Me, I want to grow and be all I can be in my business, so there was no way I was going to let any of that craziness stop me.
So, if stuff hits the fan just as you’re moving ahead and you’re ready to be more “Dog Has Bone” in your business, give me a call at 513-652-7531 and let’s chat about what that might look like.
